Please do take the time to read about our tutors below. They boast a range of experiences and degrees: including management in sales, university qualifications in law, drama, and maths, a doctorate in history and theology, training in classical music and instrumentation - even missionary work in the Philippines!

Tutor of Science
Mrs. Joy Clarke
Joy is the manager of Arise Christian Tutor Centre, as well as a wife and mum who has been inspired to provide education for secondary age children in a Christian way. She started in 2022AD with one pupil and one tutor - and since then Arise has grown!
Joy loves to see the pupils grow and become more confident, to see resilience in a generation that seems to lack.
Before creating Arise, Joy completed her A-Levels and went on to work in sales. She started at an entry level in sales and worked her way up to a management position, managing a team of twenty-five people and achieving some wonderful results. To educate and inspire young minds through excellent tutoring and a Gospel perspective is a much greater calling and reward.

Tutor of English
Mrs. Emily Horn
Emily is a wife, mother, and English Tutor. She earned a 1st Class Degree in English Literature and Drama. Prior to working at Arise, she tutored pupils for GCSE and Functional Skills exams. She also has experience in the world of Event Marketing and loves a good spreadsheet!

Emily loves to see students become confident in expressing ideas about a text and exploring their own creativity through writing (and sometimes performance).
Emily's greatest pleasure is that Arise provides an environment where everyone has the opportunity to be challenged by the word of God and encouraged by the truth of the Gospel. In her words, "What a wonderful place for students and staff to work and to flourish!"

Tutor of English
Dr. Nathan Paylor
Dr. Paylor studied as an academic for seven years, earning a BTh 1st Class Hons (Liverpool), MA (Durham, Thesis Dist.) and a PhD in Reformation Studies, before working for twelve years at several universities and academic institutions. He and his wife Jo moved to Derbyshire in 2021AD, whereupon he shortly got involved with local Christian education.
Dr. Paylor teaches English at Arise. He also founded 'Watchorn College' in 2024AD, which offers tuition in Latin and Greek, Church history, and systematic theology. He is also self-employed as a History tutor, teaching Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 history with a special interest in the English constitution and the classical tradition.

He greatly enjoys teaching English to the pupils at Arise - studying everything from the basics of grammar, to Shakespeare, Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, modernist poetry, and the literary impact of the Authorised Version.

Tutor of Maths
Mr. Chris Horn
Chris is a music teacher, a maths tutor and a graduate of the University of Liverpool. Chris has an infectious passion for education and loves inspiring pupils to believe in themselves and grow in confidence.
Chris has been responsible for company finance in several of the roles he has previously held and loves numbers! Alongside maths, Chris is known as a musician-extraordinaire - with years of experience as a chorister and then as a musician, with expertise in a variety of instruments. He has taught singing, brass and music for many years, and has led young and old alike to sing such works as Handel's Messiah.
He enjoys taking assemblies in Arise and answering the pupils difficult questions about truth, life and society. Chris is passionate about pupils stretching their minds by reading the best books, singing the best music and solving the most difficult equations! Chris also enjoys playing football at break time and also plays cricket and badminton.

Tutor of Science and Maths
Mrs. Naomi Gonzales
Naomi teaches Science and Maths at Arise. She has always enjoyed these subjects and studied them to A-level. Naomi then began her teaching journey: studying for a primary teaching degree.
After teaching in a primary school for a few years, Naomi got married and headed off to the Philippines, working as a missionary, teaching children from 5 to 18 years old in an orphanage. On heading back to England, four children later, she taught primary and secondary individual and group classes online.
In 2023AD, Naomi joined the Arise team. She loves having the opportunity to teach Maths and Science at secondary level and to be able to present scientific concepts from a Biblical perspective. It's a blessing and a privilege for her to guide the pupils in their exploration of the world, that they might see God's fingerprints in all parts of His creation.

Tutor of Maths
Mrs. Charlotte Skelton
Charlotte became a Christian in her twenties and has thoroughly enjoyed her time working in Arise, communicating the love of Christ by teaching the pupils.
Charlotte has always enjoyed learning maths since school. She completed an A-Level in the subject, then studied Law at University. Charlotte worked in the legal sector for a few years before rediscovering her love of maths, completing her PGCE in the subject.

Since then she has became a mother of two lovely boys. She was drawn to Arise because of its Christian ethos, which set it apart from other schools and tutor centres.

Charlotte says that small class sizes are a dream to teach and that the shared respect that both tutor and pupil have for each other makes Arise a lovely learning environment.

Tutor of Maths
Ms. Heidi Clarke
Heidi has spent the last two years working in Christian education and has really enjoyed supporting pupils in their learning. She has a strong interest in maths and science. Heidi is currently studying A-Level maths - taking initatives to teach herself the material! - while also holding a Level 2 qualification in Childcare.
Heidi is committed to help pupils build confidence in their subjects and approach challenges with a positive mindset. She is currently being mentored by Mrs Skelton as she continues developing her skills and experience in education.
